Patrick Kielty's Mulholland Drive

Patrick Kielty's Mulholland Drive sees the Irish comedian on a search around his second home, California to find out the truth about a man who is hailed as “the man who created LA” and lent his name to one of the most famous roads in the world, yet today remains largely forgotten in Los Angeles and virtually unknown in Ireland, where he was born.

This is a story of power, politics, violence and greed straight out of a Hollywood movie (in fact it has been the basis for several) - and William Mulholland was right in the centre of it. He was a visionary - one whose brilliance stretched beyond the everyday to encompass the seemingly unachievable, and in 1913 his career seemed unstoppable as he completed America's most ambitious engineering project, the Los Angeles Aqueduct, which brought power and water and ignited the growth of the city. Mulholland was a national hero, but as Patrick whose father and grandfather worked for the Northern Irish water authorities, discovers the story doesn’t have the Hollywood ending Patrick hoped for.
